What is a Dual Study Programme?
Germany's 'dual system' of vocational education and training
At many higher education institutions in Germany, it is common to offer a dual education, that is, the combination of work and study: Dual degree programmes are based on the principle of learning in two places and from two sources 鈥� one practical and one theory, i.e. in school and a company to give students both academic and practical qualifications.
This 鈥榙ual鈥� approach across the three year span of the programme, allows the student to obtain knowledge and competence in class that they can then apply immediately in practice. Conversely, knowledge gleaned in the workplace is discussed in class, reflected upon, and used as a benchmark for the theory. This system was developed from the German dual apprenticeship system, and there are more than 100,000 students enrolled in dual programmes in Germany today.

In cooperative (work-integrated) education, theory and practice are irrevocably intertwined. The HSBA's curriculum combines higher education and on-the-job training at more than 300 partner companies, aiming to provide both academic skills and work-related expertise. In that regard, the academic content conveyed in classroom is complemented with workplace experience, so that real-life situations immediately test the effectiveness of classroom theory and vice versa. The courses offered by HSBA therefore open up excellent career opportunities. To enable students to apply new theoretical knowledge directly in practice, the courses offered by HSBA are specifically tailored to the needs of modern businesses. This provides graduates with business knowledge they can count on to quickly take on responsibilities in any company.
Study programme
The 'dual' Bachelor's programme comprises six semesters. Each semester consists of a theoretical phase at the university (20 weeks per year on average) and a practical phase in the company (32 weeks per year on average). The third year of study is characterised by extensive elective options (focal points, elective subjects, excursions) and the Bachelor's thesis. The programme begins on 1 October each year. Application
The first step towards a dual study programme at 黑料吃瓜网 is to apply to a company. We cooperate with over 300 companies in the Hamburg metropolitan region. You can find available places in our 'Study Place Platform'. Are you interested in a dual study programme at HSBA and your company of choice is not yet a partner of HSBA? Almost all companies can offer a dual study place. So check whether you know a company that is not yet cooperating with HSBA, but which might be suitable for you.
If your application to the company was successful, the company will conclude a study contract with you and send it to the HSBA together with your application documents. As soon as all the documents have been submitted and you meet all the admission requirements, you will receive your enrolment documents from us.
